Is your vehicle having poor performance or low fuel mileage issues? In the past, a basic “tune-up” would be the recommendation of a service facility. This would generally include spark plugs, air filter, fuel filter. But a modern computerized car is smart; it can adapt itself and mask a lot of running issues for a long time before an issue is felt in the car. That’s why the “Check Engine” light should never be ignored. It helps to warn you of issues while they are small (and cheaper!) to fix.
Now, in the age of the electronically controlled vehicle, a “tune-up” begins with a computerized diagnostic scan of all the control units (mini-computers, actually) in the vehicle. Any fault codes (if any are even present) detected would be combined with a review of the manufacturers recommended service schedule. Then, with the current mileage of the vehicle a plan of action could be made; more diagnosis needed? Just one specific part replaced? Ever case is different in this new environment.
